Costume Brooches, as with all costume jewelry, was an inexpensive alternative for fashion. During the early 20th century it allowed the average house wife to dress like a movie star or royalty. With Hollywood influencing the jewelry industry like never before. In fact the term “Costume Jewelry” originated in the theater. Used to describe jewelry which matched actresses costumes.
The early 1900’s were a booming period for the jewelry industry. With many new designers popping up on the scene. Name we know well now were just beginning. Made possible by the invention of Swarovski’s machine cut Rhinestones.
The brooches found on this page will include many of these classic designers. as well as some unmarked brooches from the early 20th century into the 1990’s.
