Copper Montana Souvenir Spoon from the early 1980’s. This vintage Pure Copper Spoon is stamped with attractions found around the state. With small Miner Charm hung in the spoon’s handle.
Butte, Montana was once known as The Richest Hill on Earth. Gold prospecting in Montana dates back to
before Custer’s Last Stand. By 1864 prospectors were successfully working the placer deposits. Story has it that emigrants were told, “Don’t stop in America, go straight to Butte!.” Yet by 1871 the Gold Rush of Montana was over for the most part.
Montana mining wasn’t done though. With the arrival of the Railroad in 1880, mining operations began again. Silver was the driving force this time. While Montana Silver was lining the pockets of investors, Copper began to out weigh the Silver deposits. Just as the electrical age was dawning.
By 1896 the area was producing over 26% of the world supply.
